9th Annual Cultural Youth Summer Camp and Conference
Students –– Grades 7th - 11th
Sonoma State University, Sonoma, CA
July 10 - 14, 2007

We extend an invitation to students to join us at the Sonoma State University at Sonoma, CA for our 9th Annual "Student Summer Camp and Cultural Conference". Students will have an opportunity to experience "College Life on a University Campus" while interacting with their peers as they learn more about their Portuguese culture, heritage, and history. This popular program is sponsored by the Luso American Education Foundation and has offered a cultural summer camp - youth conference to students in junior, middle and high school at various universities and colleges since 1998.

During the camp stay, students are provided with many preliminary college experiences including living in college dorms, eating in college dining rooms and using college facilities. Adult staff members selected by L.A.E.F. provide supervision and instruction at a ratio of a maximum of five students to each adult.

Camp Participants are composed of students who:

  • have a Portuguese background or are interested in the Portuguese culture and are in grades 7 - 11, and will attend a junior, middle, or high school in Fall, 2007.
  • are considering attending college in the future and are seeking relative information

would benefit from additional motivation to pursue the Courses of Study needed to enable them to be admitted at a junior college, or a four year college or university upon graduation from high school

Camp Goals

  • to immerse the students in the multiple dimensions of college life in an atmosphere that promotes appreciation for the participants' Portuguese background and language
  • to provide information, experience and support regarding different aspects of college enrollment; such as college application procedures, FAFSA/CalGrants applications, scholarship and financial aid, entrance exams, student housing and residential life
  • to include the study and exploration of many aspects of Portuguese culture including art, architecture, music, dance, foods, literature, history, geography, and language
